The emerging topic on semantic information theory and semantic communication has attracted a lot of attention from researchers working in the area of 6G networks and beyond. In contrast to Shannon’s communication system model which is to transmit each message bit correctly regardless of its meaning, semantic communication aims at conveying the meaning of the information messages and exploring how the meaning affects the actions at the destination. Transmitting only the meaning of the data, semantic communication can be significantly more efficient. Semantic information theory aims to build the fundamental limits of semantic communication systems.

Theory Lab of Huawei Hong Kong Research Center, IEEE Information Theory Society Hong Kong Chapter, and the Department of Computer Science, City University of Hong Kong are co-organizing an online academic workshop – “Huawei – IEEE ITSoc HK Joint Workshop on Semantic Information Theory 2022”.
