We have just received the sad news that, Prof. Thomas M. Cover, an outstanding scholar in the fields of information theory, coding theory, communication networks, probability and statistics, passed away on March 27th.
We mourn the passing of Prof. Thomas M Cover. and we extend our condolences to his family.
Thomas M. Cover was born August 7, 1938, in San Bernardino, California. A Professor in the departments of electrical engineering and statistics at Stanford University, he devoted the last 35 years to developing the relationship between information theory and statistics. A recipient of the 1991 IEEE Claude E. Shannon Award, Dr. Cover was a past president of the IEEE Information Theory Society, a Fellow of the IEEE and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Science. He authored more than 100 technical papers, as well as the book Elements of Information Theory, which has become the most widely used textbook as an introduction to the topic since the publication of its first edition in 1991. Dr. Cover was also a coeditor of the book Open Problems in Communication and Computation.
