The 2023 Zugspitze Workshop on Communications was held at the Environmental Research Station Schneefernerhaus, located just below the summit of Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain, on January 23-26, 2023. The event was organized by the Institute of Communications and Navigation of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and the University of Novi Sad (UNS), Serbia, and supported by the European Union-funded project INCOMING (Innovation and excellence in massive-scale communications and information processing). The workshop had 20 registered participants.
The technical program included 12 talks. On Tuesday, January 24, the speakers were V. Ninkovic (UNS), J.-M. Gorce (INSA Lyon), L. Badia (University of Padova), O. Kundacina (UNS), K.-H. Ngo (Chalmers University of Technology), and A. Sauter (DLR). On Wednesday, January 25, the speakers were A. Munari (DLR), I. Leyva-Mayorga (Aalborg University), M. Petkovic (UNS), T. Devaja (UNS), M. Roth (DLR), D. Vukobratovic (UNS) and A. Zahr (DLR). Each day included dedicated joint brainstorming sessions and discussions about possible joint research collaboration topics.
The talk topics included channel code design and decoding, machine learning applied to communications, massive uncoordinated multiple access protocols, age of information and random access, integrated terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks, distributed model-based methods (graphical models) and data-based methods (graph neural networks). The underlying theme driven by the INCOMING project was the question of massive and timely data collection via massive Internet of Things (IoT) networks and efficient, scalable, large-scale, and distributed in-network processing and inference.
The participants enjoyed daily trips to restaurants below and on top of the Zugspitze summit, refreshments and dinners at the venue (Environmental Research Station Schneefernerhaus), and numerous opportunities for discussions and collaborations. Additionally, the location provided three days of wonderful sunny weather and amazing views across the German and Austrian Alps.
