Aims and Scope:
------------------------------
Fixed spectrum allocation schemes for wireless communications
proved to be rigid, inefficient and may even lead to spectrum scarcity.
Cognitive radio technologies promise to solve these issues. The
cognitive or dynamic spectrum access schemes enable smart, adaptive
wireless communications that could seamlessly co-exist with existing
wireless networks and provide truly anytime, anywhere access. Cognitive
radio devices constantly sense the operating environment and access
the spectrum/channels in a non intrusive, decentralized manner. These
networks avoid harmful interference with primary users using advanced
techniques such as collaborative sensing and distributed intelligence.
Recent developments in various frontiers such as, software defined radio,
adaptive RF circuits, reconfigurable processing devices, real time
adaptive signal processing, as well as sophisticated spectrum monitoring
and predicting technologies promise to make cognitive radio a reality.
This Special Issue solicits original and unpublished work not currently
under review by any other conference or journal in cognitive and smart
radio technologies. The topic areas cover all aspects of networks,
systems and devices that participate in spectrum sensing/accessing in a
cooperative/non-cooperative manner. This includes algorithmic and
architectural support for cognitive networks, efficient usage of
licensed/unlicensed bands, interference avoidance with primary incumbents, policy and regulatory issues, application platforms, experimental test beds, mathematical models for distributed decision making, and emerging standards.
